Special Program in Focus “New Voices, Chinese Films,”
Features Emerging Chinese Directors,
And Continues to Highlight Up-and-Coming Asian Directors
This year, the Busan International Film Festival established the BIFF Film Academy (BFA) program, which offers an even more systematic and long-term education, and has inherited the AFA’s objective of fostering new film talents in Asia. The BFA is a novel educational program that fuses the film festival platform and a degree program in a way that has never been attempted by other existing international film festivals. The program will be jointly operated with the Im Kwon Taek College of Arts and Film, which has been a partner university with the festival for a long time.
The Im Kwon Taek College of Arts and Film at Dongseo University, which jointly operates the BFA with BIFF, has been a partner institution of the Asian Film Academy (AFA) for many years, and has co-hosted the 6th Asia University Film Festival (AUFF, a film festival operated by a group of universities from Korea, China, and Japan, and established to discover and foster Asian film talents through cultural exchanges among film universities). Based on this concept, the Busan International Film Festival partnered with the Im Kwon Taek College of Arts and Film, which is endeavoring to foster global film talent, to establish the BFA program.
BFA, the Hub of Asian Film Education
Based on veteran filmmaker expertise that has been accumulated from several support programs, including the AFA, the ACF, and the APM, and through the BFA, which operates a professional degree program, the Busan International Film Festival plans to foster professional filmmakers.
The BFA will provide an experiential, on-site education that combines film screenings, various film industry participation programs, and an aggregate network of filmmakers, as well as proceed with various academic exchange activities, international forums wherein film students are active agents, and research of the film industry and its policies.
Based on such diverse educational activities, BFA is expected to become the hub of Asian film education in the future. Its role as a film studies laboratory will allow for sustainable growth and a continuing symbiotic relationship between the film festival and BFA.
Through a specialized service company established by the Busan International Film Festival, BFA will also offer study-abroad counseling, a one-on-one mentoring program, supplementary education for Korean language and major courses, comfortable dormitory rooms, and medical and legal advisory services, with the goal of forming a high-quality, study-abroad environment.
The BFA program begins its first semester in March 2022, and admissions for the first graduating class is actively underway. The deadline for next spring’s application is late November of 2021.
