Program Note
?El Gusto’means taste or pleasure, but in this film it is the name of an orchestra made up of Muslim, Jewish, and French musicians. The only thing the musicians have in common is that they all performed Sha-bii, music originating from Algeria. After a 50-year separation, they reunite to give a special concert in Marseille, France. This documentary brims with emerging director Safinez Bousbia’s love for his homeland. In the opening sequence, the hand-held camera covers Kasba, home base of Algerian resistance during its war of independence. The area has been considered as dangerous and foreboding, but by the directer’s affectionate gaze, it Kasba is re-awakened as the birthplace of Sha-bii. Naturally, the concert dominates the latter half of this moving film; the elderly orchestra’s performance is profound and stirring. This outstanding film is one of the most highly recommended music films of this year. (RHEE Soue-won)
