The true story of Romanian laborer Claudio Crulic who died in a Polish prison after refusing to eat comes to the big screen as an animation. The first person narrative by the main character starts off by telling us of his death at 33. He was born in a common home and moved abroad to make money. There he is falsely accused of theft. He tries to appeal his innocence in prison, but ends up dying of starvation. Despite the tragic storyline, the animation and themusic are beautiful. The irony of the situation in which a person is discriminated against simply for being a foreign laborer?despite strong circumstantial evidence to the contrary?is a serious and weighty subject, but the movie skillfully makes it light and humorous. Real news reports appear with the ending credits, through which the sad state of the constitution and bureaucratic failing is plainly exposed, leaving us with lingering bitterness. (Karen PARK)
