Program Note
Through the death of his maternal grandfather on November, 2001, the director learns more about the complicated stories of his maternal grandmother’s family. In the small village where his grandmother’s family lived, there were feuds in class and ideology. The director tells in a calm narration the story of how the family was forced to be scattered apart to the south, north, and even Japan. The film is divided into groups of people who feel they cannot speak of things even within the family and those who think they should bravely reveal the truth. The film contains very private stories and it will be interesting to see the response of the villager and their families. This is not just about one family’s sad story but it reveals our nation’s unsolved problems. The film remains serene and composed with carefully arranged directing. (HONG Hyosook)
