Program Note
This year’s distinctive animation shows the surprising evolution of Japanimation. The production team of the first Japanese full CG animation, Appleseed (2004), gathers again. In 2067, Japan closes its gates to the world to sustain its superior position in Robot technology and Bio technology. Ten years later, Vexille, a female leader of the special unit SWORD under UN authority, and her fellow agent Leon penetrate into Japan to expose the hidden conspiracy with the help of a group of Japanese. However, they are hunted by an android sent by a giant company DAIWA and are put in a dangerous situation. Finally, they witness the gruesome reality of Japan after 10 years of isolation. The film’s dystopian take on a world that exposes the mirage of development and happiness brought by the advance of science and technology, along with the dynamic mystery drama and grand-scale visuals work well to make the film memorable.
