Suh Myung-soo`s first feature film, Butterflymole, draws upon the tension and exhaustion experienced by subway train conductors working underground like moles and meeting with death everyday. They frequently witness the deaths of passengers who jump into the path of moving trains, and slowly they become infected by the desperation of these passengers. The fate of scores of the anonymous dead instigates in them a sense of crisis. Making several trips between the subway and the outside world with unknown actors, director Suh achieves a very impressive visual texture. The visualization of the closed feeling in the palpable train space evokes the sentiment of being closed-in; the camera carrying with it signs of hope from outside. Unpolished performances by the unknown actors often steps up to us as a horrific reality that couldn`t be shown by skilled professionals. In actual fact, the desperation of these subway train conductors can`t easily be easily expressed by playing: when extremely desperate people are envisioned by performance and style in a quiet tone, we realize the true meaning of the film.
