Program Note
Nomadic families herd horses and lambs in deserted plains. What do the kids of a nomad family do to play? Mongolian Ping Pong is an answer to the question and maybe a little bit more. Bilgee finds a ping pong ball in the river. He doesn′t know what to do with this treasure. From a broken TV, the little kids come to believe that the ping pong ball is the national ball of China. They decide to run away from home to carry out an important mission of returning the treasure to the country. This event is comparable to the Bushman finding a coke bottle. It determines the rest of the story and makes us smile. Mongolian Ping Pong is a fable of a simple and naive nomads slowly being poisoned by the shallowness of civilization. Long takes, long shots, and a fixed camera portray the beauty of the children′s world and at the same time, it shows how thin and breakable the boundary drawn by the nomads has become. Mongolian Ping Pong captures the last moment of slowly disappearing beauty and subtly praises the nomadic life. (Kang So-won)
