Program Note
One Night Husband is a story of a Thai woman whose husband disappears on their weddingnight. Sipang searches for her missing husband with the help of Chatchai, the older brother of her husband, and his wife, Busaba, One day, Sipang witnesses Busaba being abused by her husband and comes to take care of her. The two women gradually grow close to each other. The sudden disappearance of the husband in this film forces us to look into the Asian subject of suffering brought on by the disruption caused by the confusion of values. Sipang′s depair at the loss of her husband and her subsequent psychological stresses-she is not a wife, she is not divorced-clings to her like a fever. And, this fever is the deep-rooted disease of contemporary Asians who are drifting between traditional values and lethargic modern values. This film symbolizes this disease through empty space, humid air, steaming heat and poor indoor lighting. The gaze of camera that captures a tactile and olfactory intimacy, obsessively absorbs masculine hysteria and closely observes the emotion shared between Sipang and Busaba. From time to time, the two women communicate in sentiment and memory, regardless of whether they are in fantasy or reality, or in darkness or light. Such gazes don′t stop at only depicting the neurosis of modernization, but goes further to target the love and life that the two women feel. (Kim Ji-hoon)
