Director Manish Jhâ says that if the proportion of males and females keeps shifting the way it is today, India will face a horrible future. The imaginary India portrayed in Matrubhoomi: A Nation without Women is a nation where only in stinct and hatred exist. Even though a dowry becomes the responsibility of men in a society where women are scarce, that doesn′t mean that men have changed their attitudes toward women. Jhâ imagines that if the men pay the dowry, the situation of women would get worse, not better. Kalki, who is sold as a bride to five brothers for the huge dowry that her family receives, is treated as a sexual slave. Because of this type of sexual tension, society soon deteriorates to the state where only animalistic instincts survive and where chaos and violence are rampant. And people who try to maintain a sense of humanity are eliminated by this brutal violence. However, this horrible future that Manish Jhâ imagines is not so different from reality. Matrubhoomi is a space that can be true at any time. Matrubhoomi: A Nation without Women is a film that shockingly portrays the evils of India′s systematic sexual discrimination. (Kim Ji-seok)
