Program Note
Shohei Imamura′s preoccupation has always been the subject of what it means to be ′Human′ Although his characters may sometimes smell of filth, the point is that they always delve deeply into the condition of man and his nature. Of special interest to Imamura is the primitive vitality of women. In this film, he depicts man′s sexual vanities in relation to the mysteriousness of women. A middle-aged man, Yosuke, suddenly remembers what his vagrant friend Taro had told him about a treasure hidden somewhere. Newly divorced and unemployed, Yosuke sets out on a trip to look for a house located near a red bridge, which Taro told him will be somewhere in a fishing village in Tomaya. Once there, he meets a woman named Saeko. Saeko is a mutant who, unless she has sex with a man, is unable to emit water outside her body. The water she needs to expel is such a large amount that, every time she has intercourse with a man, it literally overflows--creating a grand scene in which the water reaches the river and seagulls fly in. Yosuke soon becomes a slave of Saeko, and he slowly finds himself rejuvenated. Using the two performers of his prior film The Eel, this film is a fairy-tale fantasy for adults. (Shion Yang)
