Program Note
There′s a film director with a firm belief in the artistic value of movies. Due to the projectionist′s mistake during a film preview, a low-grade film is shown instead of the director′s much-anticipated new film. Furious, the director criticizes the projectionist, but to his dismay, the viewers are very much enjoying the film. This turns out to be a nightmare dreamt by a filmmaker named Amir. The Road is a detailed diary of one film director′s obsessions and trivial desires. The film attempts, in a serene tone, to show all of the unimportant recollections and weird desires passing through Amir′s mind during his short trip to his hometown after hearing of his mother′s illness. His memories and desires vary from difficulties he experienced in film making, to indiscretions with a young female editor, to occurrences with a waitress in a restaurant. When he arrives in his hometown after struggling to fight his sexual fantasies and miserable frustrations, he finds his mother has already passed away. This film not only portrays the strong willpower of an artist and the gap between consciousness and unconsciousness, but it also shows a sort of biographical depiction of a director′s desolate mind.
