Program Note
The renowned Japanese mystery writer Rampo Edogawa and Shinya Tsukamoto make their extraordinary rendezvous in Gemini. The grotesque world of Edogawa and the dynamic and fantastic world of Shinya Tsukamoto make for an unexpected harmony. Even though the story takes place in the Meiji era of the early 20th century, Gemini seems to be set in the distopian future. Yukio runs a medical practice in Tokyo with his parents and his wife, Rin, who hides a mysterious past. Suddenly, strange things begin to happen to Yukio. After his parents′ terrifying and sudden deaths, Yukio is attacked by a man whose face is his own and trapped in a deep well. It is Yukio′s identical twin, Sutekichi, who had lived as a beggar after being abandoned by his parents. He comes for revenge after he realizes that his former lover, Rin, lives with Yukio and the parents who threw him away. Shinya′s dynamic camera work expertly captures human beings losing their minds in this dystopia. Shinya sticks to the cyber-punk style in costume design, make-up, and hairstyle, transcending the s be did in his former works. In addition, the audiences will enjoy looking for interesting cameos. Butoh performer Maro Akaji as the tramp leader Kakubee appears to be a perfect fit, and the surprise appearances of Tadanobu Asano and Naoto Takenaka will give the audience pleasure (Kim Ji-Seok)
