Program Note
Abbas Kiarostami presents a man whose interest in death turns into an epiphany that reveals the value of life and nature. A group of reporters from Tehran arrive in a small Kurdish village near the Iranian border, in order to cover the coming death of an old villager. Behzad, one of the reporters, meets a boy named Farzad who leads him to Malek, the dying old woman that he is supposed to cover. Behzad’s original interest was in a traditional Kurdish ritual of slashing one’s face as a sign of lament and respect when a relative dies. But through saving an old man’s life and through his friendship with the village doctor, Behzad begins to recognize the value of life and nature. Kiarostami satirizes modern civilization, through an ironic situation in the small village where a cellular phone is not a convenience but a trouble. He values face-to-face conversation, such as Behzad’s conversations with Farzad and the doctor, as a medium to help us gain greater understanding. It, therefor, seems like a penance in pursuit of the truth when Behzad climbs up and down the hill just to make a phone call. But once again, Kiarostami, praised as a “philosopher on the hill”, makes his protagonist climb up a hill to seek the meaning of life.
