Program Note
Providing the grandiose spectacle of war between a human civilization which threatens nature and the outraged divinities(Mononoke),Hayal Miyazaki's masterpiece Mononoke Hime became one of the biggest box office successes in Japan, confirming the world-wide respect for Japanimation and the Ghibli Studio. With a sublime theme of ‘returning to nature’,this Japanese action-adventure film was produced solely by Japanese professionals with their own artistic and technical know-how.Even in a world fraught with massacre and hatred, people manage to find the meaning of life, demonstrating that people can find a ray of hope in any circumstance by understanding each other. In the midst of the turbulent Muromachi era,the ancient sacred forest remains as intact as a sanctuary, despite the increased number of humans and their violation of nature.Set against men attenmpting to violate the divine sanctuary are the divinties called ‘Mononoke’,who guard the forest and are capable of using human languages, and a girl named San who they have brought ep. Meanwhile,Ashitake,a young man condemned by the curse of harmful divinity, happens to kill a mononoke that has turned into ‘the God of Tatari’(ghost of unresolved grief)due to rage and hatred. He subsequntly undertakes a journey to break the secret spell of the curse on his wrist. The divinities that protect nature, the human beings that stand up against them in the name of civilization, the cursed young man,and the girl fostered by the Mononoke....The human being'will to life ultimately leads us to question, beyond mere ecology, the relationship between men and nature,a theme that Hayao Miyazaki has tirelessly explored in his efforts to portray human nature in depth.(Shion Yang)
