Program Note
I clearly remembered when I had the first vision of The Red Violin. It was in February 1994 and I was in a London cab, running late for a rendezvous. Today the film is finished and I look back proudly to what we did. The Red Violin is a film about love, art and beauty; about the traces we leave behind us after we die. I believe those are the things that drive our world." (Francois Girard) In anticipation of the birth of his first child, master violinmaker Nicolo Bussotti begins what will be his greatest achievement. But when his wife dies in childbirth, what was meant as a celebratory offering quickly becomes a fixation. Overwhelmed with grief, Bussotti continues his work determined to create an everlasting tribute to his love: a perfect violin imbued with her spirit. So begins the story of The Red Violin, as it travels across continents, cultures and centuries inspiring passion and obsession in every life it touches.

François GIRARD
François Girard stunned English Canada in 1994 with his brilliant feature Thirty Two Short Films about Glenn Gould, which won four Genies including best director and best picture. His career as a filmmaker started in Montreal a decade earlier when he founded Zone Productions. His third feature, The Red Violin (1998) was another immense triumph, winning eight Genies (including best picture and best director) and an Oscar for best original soundtrack. His work in commercials has been rewarded with many prizes, and the Montreal Publicity Club named him director of the year in 1997.
