Program Note
This film is a visual chronicle of the year-long fight of Sammi Special Steel workers for employment security. In December 1996, the Korean government rushed through a new labor bill legalizing mass layoffs in a nation where lifetime employment had been practically guaranteed in the past. Since then, the will and perseverance of the steelworkers have been sorely tested by a tumultuous string of events: The dismissal of 500 employees after the privatization of POSCO, a state-owned steel company; a 180-day fight; the Seoul-Changwon-Pohang struggle; the 20-day hunger strike of 44 employees; a presidential election campaign. A whole year - four seasons - pass and still, their fight continues. The film is valuable, not only because it documents a significant period in Korea′s labor history, but also because it deals with issues which have yet to be resolved. The drama of the events in the film is heightened within the greater context of Korea′s large-scale economic reform in the midst of its worst economic crisis in decades. (Lee Sang-Yong)
