Program Note
In a remote fishing village in the 1950’s, Pepito, son of the island’s only midwife, grows up learning his mother’s trade. As he grows older, he becomes uncomfortable with this traditional woman’s occupation. The story follows his struggles with local prejudices, and his own misgivings, towards deeper understanding and maturity.

Marilou Diaz-Abaya
Born in Philippines in 1955, Marilou Diaz-Abaya earned her MA in Film and TV at Loyola Marymount University, and did additional courses at the London International Film School. She has directed 18-feature films to date, many of them were multiple award-winners. She pursues an active leadership role in the Philippines movie and television industries. Her films include Madonna and Child(1996), Milagros(1997), In the Navel of the Sea(1998), Jose Rizal(1998) and Reef Hunter(1999).
