Program Note
First introduced as a series on the internet and then a best-selling novel of the same title, The Soul Guardians uses visual technology to depict the conflict between good and evil. The opening in the film recalls an actual event that occurred in Korea. Saved from her dead mother′s womb, Seung-Hee is danger of being sacrificed for the devil′s resurrection 20 years later. Father Park and Hyun-Am attempt to save her without much results and are instead pursued by the police who suspect them to be perpetrators of the recent serial murders. Critics have shown interest in this film as a ′Korean blockbuster′ the film is promoted to be. Considering that most of the major Korean films flopped in the theaters, and with the impact of the economic crisis, it is truly a bold attempt to present this ′Hollywood-like′ film. The improvement in film technology has provided many aspects worth seeing in this film. The car repair shop scene when Seung-Hee′s life is threatened is superb with its outstanding editing, lighting and sound effects. One shortcoming of this film is the lack of a strong storyline and perfect climax. (Lim Kyung-Hun)
