Program Note
The end to his partner’s lingering illness is the catalyst that sends a Belgian man on a quest for salvation in Romania’s barren wasteland. Losing himself in an animalistic existence that leads to madness, he allows his the past to consume and ultimately devour him. Drift is a story of a man who desperately wanders around on the open sea of life after losing his compass. What happened in the past is gradually revealed. In the present, the man leaves his house and wanders the streets. The camera follows his unstable steps and extreme actions. At the same time, a police officer talks about dogs as if he were a philosopher. Naturally, the man looks like a dog. Just like a street dog that left the mountain, was domesticated and now has nowhere to return to, the man can’t find his place in this world any more. More exactly, this world is a place he can no longer stay. Overwhelmed by his pain and grief, the man tries to destroy his body. Strangely enough, the man’s such self-abuse makes the film a chillingly beautiful love story. (RHEE Soue-won)

Benny VANDENDRIESSCHE
Through the years, Benny Vandendriessche has developed an interest in creating strong images through an intuitive approach. He started as a director in television but later through installations and video clips he has explored the power of physical performances. Never aiming for pre-constructed results Vandendriessche finds the “truth” of his images are shaped by on-set improvisation.
