Stefano Sollima has ascended to the ranks of film noir masters with Adagio, the story of a young boy living with natural disaster, a corrupt society, and his father’s crimes. Sixteen-year-old Manuel receives an instruction from a corrupt police officer to secretly record a politician at a nightclub but flees without capturing the video at the last moment. Struggling with threats thereafter, he seeks help from aged and ailing former gang members, acquaintances of his father’s past. Can the old gangsters find a path to redemption by saving the boy? Director Sollima captivates the audience with mise-en-scène reminiscent of opera, a style similar to Brian De Palma’s in The Untouchables (1987) and Carlito’s Way (1993).
