Program Note
In a village nestled at the foot of the Himalayas in eastern Nepal, a skilled craftsman named Maila leads a humble but happy life with his wife, Maili, and seven-year-old son, Bindre. One day, the quiet life of his village is disrupted by the construction of a long-awaited road. As urban influences, such as television, Coca-Cola, and hip-hop music, are introduced to the community, the villagers gradually succumb to convenience and shift their attitudes toward life. Under the name of civilization, capitalism engulfs the village, uprooting the lives of the people who had once lived in harmony with nature, without possessions or worldly knowledge. It is always the most vulnerable among them who bear the brunt of these changes. With a sense of respect, A Road to A Village portrays this transformation like a fable. (PARK Sun Young)
