Program Note
Ninety-year-old Mbah Sri decides to travel to look for her husband, who has never returned after going to war in the 1940s. Her only wish is to be buried next to her husband grave when she dies. This unusual road movie is a slow burning tale with surprising elements provided by the characters that Mbah Sri encounters along the way. The story unfolds little by little through the facts told by different people and touches some sensitive issues of communism and Dutch invasion in Indonesia. All told in a very casual yet strong scenes, Tales of the Otherwords is a contemplative reflection on the troubled past of Indonesia. (John BADALU)
