Program Note
What happened in September 1923? This movie explores the tragedy that followed the Great Kanto Earthquake. In the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake, rumors spread that Koreans had poisoned the wells, leading to the massacre of thousands of Koreans by Japanese soldiers and armed Japanese. The truth of what happened is still unclear, but Mori Tatsuya′s investigation of the event in this narrative feature is impressive. In September 1923, a group of fifteen impoverished Japanese peddlers arrive in the village of Fukudamara. Selling medicines and everyday goods, they are mistaken for Koreans because they speak an unfamiliar local dialect. This is the beginning of the Fukudamara incident, which is not well known in Japan. Like the Korean genocide, the Fukudamara incident remains a covered-up event in Japan’s past. “Ninety-nine years have passed since these tragic events, and few people know the facts,” says the director. To which the producer also adds: “We must not become oblivious. Knowing, remembering, and communicating will always be acts of resistance.” (NAM Dong-chul)
