Program Note
A theater for animals opens, and the history of mankind unfolds across the screen. What will the animals learn from watching the history of human tragedies, such as Hitler’s brutal reign, the Vietnam War, atomic bombs, Nazi concentration camps, civil wars, and genocides? In Everything will be OK, Rithy Panh imagines a world where the animals are in charge. The film takes the worldview of Animal Farm and is partially reminiscent of Planet of the Apes (1968), but it is actually closer to an expansion of Rithy Panh’s own style and themes that were explored in his previous works The Missing Picture (2013) and Irradiated (2020). Combining archive film and stop motion animation to create a dystopian fable, this unique documentary uses extensive citations from Méliès to Robespierre, multiple split-screens where archive footage is projected, and metaphor-filled narration to display Rithy Panh’s poignant vision of the future.
