Program Note
This year’s Palme d’Or winner is an unapologetic social satire that may ruffle some feathers with its uncomfortable jokes, but is undeniably entertaining. The ping-pong dialogues are as smooth as the luxury cruise boat’s polished floors; the characters are hilariously stereotypical, whether ultra-rich or “famous for being famous” or at the bottom of the social ladder; the vomit inducing (both literally and figuratively) scenes while two fools swap quotes on capitalism reek of alcohol. So when the boat is finally capsized and hierarchy is overthrown, the euphoria is exhilarating. Ruben Ostlund’s mastery constructs a meticulous world that looks like a total wreck on surface. He makes you laugh without even realizing, and at the same time he raises questions that demand careful contemplation. In case you’re wondering, the meaning of the title is given away in less than five minutes, but it isn’t until the end that its true interpretation is revealed. (Karen PARK)
