Program Note
“All you need is a bit of creativity and the will of people to believe in it.” Based on an actual hijacking incident in March 1970, Good News is a unique black comedy where the charm lies as much in the ‘telling’ as in the ‘story’ itself. Japan’s Red Army Faction of the Japan Communist League hijacks Japan Airlines’ flight to go to Pyongyang. When the flight heading to Pyongyang, threatening the crew and passengers, enters South Korean airspace, under the design of the mysterious figure Nobody (Sul Kyung-gu), intelligence chief Park Sang-hyeon (Ryoo Seung-bum) and Air Force lieutenant Seo Go-myung (Hong Kyung) join forces to launch an audacious rescue operation that deceives everyone on board. While rooted in a true story, the film allows itself the fullest play of imagination, maintaining a delicate balance—neither too heavy nor too light—while never losing sight of entertainment. Directed by Byun Sung-hyun (The Merciless, Kingmaker), the film brims with his trademark wit and sly humor, delivering a work of magical storytelling. (SONG Kyung-won)
