Program Note
As graduation exams approach, Ábel finds himself unable to concentrate on his studies. Janka, a fellow student whom he secretly admires, has a crush on their teacher Jakab. Meanwhile, Jakab, who teaches history to Ábel and Janka, is in a precarious situation due to differences in political views with Ábel’s father. Reminiscent of early works by Joachim Trier, Explanation for Everything delves into events unfolding over a week in a Budapest high school, capturing the issues of our polarized society. Just as we feel uneasy about the Korean flag fluttering alongside the American flag at Taegeukgi rallies in Gwanghwamun Square, the badges commemorating Hungary’s independence and expressing patriotism have lost their meaning, transforming into a divisive symbol that separates people. With hostility and blame pouring from both extremes, the path to reconciliation and coexistence seems elusive. Director Gábor Reisz, who has woven the engaging plot of the film with strongly characterized figures freely navigating through it, has established himself as a leading figure of Hungarian cinema.
