Program Note
Ann Hui, a director known for vividly depicting the dynamic lives of the people of contemporary Hong Kong society, brings to life a long-cherished project: an examination of contemporary Hong Kong poetry. In Elegies, Ann Hui interviews poets, compiles their legacies, and examines their everyday lives and their poetry. The film notably focuses on two poets, providing a meticulous portrayal of the worlds of Huang Can-Ran, leading a unique life with his own rhythm, and Liu Wai-Tong, who perceptively reacts to the changing world and continues to evolve. With profound admiration for the poets who carry life’s colorful sensations and a deep passion for the art of poetry, Ann Hui has crafted a film that captures the profound emotions of life. Elegies was the opening film at this year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival. (HONG Eunmi)
