Program Note
There are more than forty-five billion cameras on the planet today, constantly capturing every moment of our lives, both mundane and extraordinary. The camera has become humanity’s shiny new toy. Swedish duo Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck take a hard-hitting look at how these “fantastic machines” have shaped human behavior over the past 200 years, travelling from the camera obscura, through the Lumière brothers’ cinematograph, to YouTube and social media, where we showcase our narcisstic moments. Watching Islamic fundamentalist militants stumble through NG cuts may be hilarious, but witnessing the director of a Nazi propaganda movie brag about how sophisticated her filming and editing techniques are is creepy. As we experience so many examples of images being distorted and abused, where should we go from here, holding a cell phone equipped with a high-performance camera in each of our hand? (Karen PARK)
