Program Note
In her latest film, released after a decade-long hiatus, Breillat has remade the Danish film Queen of Hearts (2019). Anne has a sexual relationship with her stepson. Unlike her mother’s more sexually liberal generation, she considers her part of a generation with repressed desires. Breillat doesn’t elevate this forbidden love beyond personal or moral considerations. Instead, she delves into the core of the bourgeois family. By changing the original characters of Anne’s two daughters into Asian adoptees, the film highlights Anne and her husband’s hypocrisy. They don’t hesitate to lie to ensure the family’s integrity. Anne, bound by her professional obligation to protect adolescents, finds herself unable to maintain her relationship with her stepson, and innocent desires become casualties. No matter how she listens to “Dirty Boots” by Sonic Youth and pretends to be young, the problem is not the aging of the physical body but of the mind. (LEE Yong Cheol)
