Program Note
Italian filmmaker Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) is preparing a movie about the conscience of the Italian Communist Party in 1956. Should the Italian Communist Party side with the Soviet Union or support the independent Hungary? This dilemma is played out through Giovanni and his wife, who advocate for different camps. Giovanni’s wife, who is also a producer, eventually leaves him, and the French producer (Mathieu Amalric) is arrested for fraud, which halts filming. A Brighter Tomorrow is as much a political comedy as it is a chronicle of a couple and a bittersweet look at the Italian film industry. Will Giovanni accept the offer of a Korean producer who introduced him to the flavor of soju? With imagination and humor, Nanni Moretti expresses his love for free cinema and political films and captivates the audience with beautiful canzones. A Brighter Tomorrow says: Even in the worst of times, we still need to believe that the future will be brilliant. (SEO Seunghee)
