Program Note
Hana Makhmalbaf’s The List begins where her father Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s Talking with Rivers leaves off. When the US troops withdraw in August 2021, Afghanistan fell into the Taliban’s hands, and the fate of anti-Taliban artists and journalists has become painfully evident. Upon learning this news in a foreign country, the Makhmalbaf family steps up to rescue Afghan artists in crisis. In the face of impending danger, a palpable tension permeates the Makhmalbafs’ home like the situation room of a spy film. After compiling a list of people they wish to rescue, efforts to seek aid from the French government, and rounds of negotiations, the Makhmalbaf family finally achieve their goal. The List is a rare and remarkable record of the conviction and dedication of a family, who believed that they had a role to play even in the inferno of the Kabul Airport. (KANG Sowon)
