Program Note
Marusya is crying at her friend Kimi’s funeral. Their relationship over a decade has come to an end, and this is where the story starts. Maruysa and Kimi are rebels against the status quo and partners in crime, struggling to live – or at least feel alive – in Russia, a “federation for the depressed.” The couple shares fleeting moments of joy that feel like balancing on a tightrope. They go to indie music concerts, adopt a cat, participate in political protests, trying their very best to avoid being caught up in the misery and anxiety from which their generation suffers. Can they save themselves or each other? It takes so much courage to record one’s most fragile moments, and even more courage to display it for everyone to see. This documentary is frighteningly raw and honest, fearsomely intimate and tender, a personal memoir that speaks to the soul of all the young and restless millennials. (Karen PARK)
