January 2019, filmmaker Karim Aïnouz crosses the Mediterranean on a ferry boat and embarks on a journey to his father′s homeland, high up in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria. He is not sure of what he will do or find, but picks up his camera and documents a travel essay of his father who went off to fight in the revolution, his pregnant mother who was left behind, their love story "like Audrey Hepburn and Jean-Paul Belmondo", and himself living as a Brazilian with an Algerian name. He carries his camera with him everywhere, constantly changing filters that make the film appear like a fever dream. He compares the parallel colonial histories of Brazil and Algeria, meets a little girl resembling his mother, and even runs into a ′doppelgänger′ that is called by the same name and was born in the same year. This is an emotional, sentimental memoir that raises intellectual questions about identity, love, family, and politics. (Karen PARK)
