Program Note
Gu Xiaogang expanded an autobiographical documentary about his hometown of Fuyang and his family amid the development frenzy into the feature film Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. As the title suggests, the film tells the story of a family living at the foot of the Fuchun Mountains and the Fuchun River. Four brothers face their own dilemmas over the issue of caring for their sick old mother. Unlike the humans who are engrossed in difficulties, Fuchun Mountain’s natural scenery is unwavering. Fuchun’s four seasons are unraveled in an extreme long shot like a landscape painting, and long takes capture Fuchun′s river and mountains as well as
its people in one screen, in ways that closely resemble the languid scenery of nature. With an extended family narrative, local folk traditions, and stories of homecoming, the film reveals an aspect of the Chinese worldview and philosophy. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is the first in a trilogy envisioned by Gu Xiaogang. (JEONG Jihye)
