Program Note
Lin, a documentary filmmaker from Beijing, finishes the screening of her new film in Tokyo and heads to Niigata Prefecture, where Kawabata Yasuwari wrote Snow Country. She recently split up with her long-time lover, Guiren. After a short event in Hong Kong, she takes the subway and a ferry to reach a quiet forest. While birds sing, insects chirp, and the brook babbles above Lin’s silence, she walks, pauses, gazes, and walks again, becoming part of the nature. Born as the second child in China in the late 1970s, when the "one child policy" was implemented, to parents who experienced the Cultural Revolution in their youth, director Song Fang had recorded the responsibilities and familial bond of her parents’ generation in her first feature Memories Look at Me (2012) with the perspective and sentiments of a 30-something woman. The Calming, which promises absolute silence and calm, is her second feature film. (CHOI Eun)
