Program Note
Lucknow, northern India, in 1962. In the upper-class family of a high-ranking police officer, Shankar is an indispensable servant. To Anjana who attends a Catholic school and her little brother Bhaiya, Shankar is a nanny, a cook, and a best friend who tells them funny stories. One day, Shankar receives news that his daughter has fallen ill, and he asks to take a vacation. Through Anjana’s eyes, Shankar’s Fairies reveals the contradictions in the Indian class system through the story of Shankar, who is like family but can never be family or even an equal human being. Based on an autobiographical novel written by her mother Nita Kumar, the first feature film by director Irfana Majumdar is full of affection. It was filmed in the Nita Kumar’s childhood home, and the director herself and her husband appear in the film as Anjana’s parents. (PARK Sun Young)
