Program Note
There is a young, homeless man in Beijing, who does nothing other than going to church to pray. He prays to God for death. For a decade, he has been suffering from a rare genetic disease that makes it impossible for him to control his body, and now he just wants the pain to stop. Pebble observes this young man’s miserable life from a close distance. Even as he digs through trash cans to look for food or spits curses at passersby, the camera maintains a colorless gaze without a hint of judgment or criticism, but it reacts emotionally to his physical pain. One day, tired of waiting for God’s salvation, the young man decides to return home, and director QIAO Quentin accompanies him on his journey. Will the young man’s wish come true? It shows the naked faces of low-class Chinese people joined by jump cuts filmed on a handheld camera, and the black and white images make Beijing seem like an unfamiliar place somewhere on an alien planet; and its people, like ghosts or illusions. But the young, homeless man remains vivid throughout the film. (KANG Sowon)
