Program Note
In Marseilles, where Apartheid is still in effect, Tau is the leader of Five Fingers, the only group of boys who secretly resist Apartheid. He happens to kill two cops, which provokes extreme violence that thrusts the Five Fingers, as well as the town of Marseille, into the swirl of change. Tau gets released from prison after serving 20 years of his sentence and comes back to the town. He decides to start to fight again in the town suffering from new threats. First-time director Michael Matthews portrays the reality of South Africa in the style of the Western. He highlights the issues of racism, colonialism and the neocolonial problems in light of independence while using the icons and the conventions of western genre, such as the wilderness, trains, outlaws, the good and the bad, and life risking fights. When Tau introduces himself as “nobody” or slow-motion is used, we see an homage to Sergio Leone and the mannerism style of the Spaghetti Western. The upbeat background music contributes to increasing the excitement of the film. (RHEE Souewon)
