Program Note
The sudden fall of a middle-aged man with a hitherto successful life might not seem that unusual, but it’s worth noting here that this film takes on the darker side of Sweden with humor and satire, through the protagonist’s downward life trajectory in this Scandinavian country known for its welfare. The scenes of pickpocketing and an argument with a boy from an immigrant family reveal some cracks in Sweden’s seemingly perfect veneer. Director Ruben Östrund highlights middle class people holding their breath and adapting to this rich but unhappy society. In focusing on characters with several long takes, the film makes them look ridiculous, while at the same time leaving the viewer with a quietly bitter smile. With a well-woven structure, an icy tone and precision mise-en-scène, The Square maintains its cynicism and tension throughout, showcasing the director’s skillful production. The fifth film by Östrund, director of Force Majeure, The Square won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, and earned him a position as the leading Swedish filmmaker of the next generation.
