Program Note
Chloé suffers depression and goes to see a psychiatrist, Paul. She happens to fall in love and starts to live with him. When she finds Paul has a twin brother, the tough, sexy Louis, however, she starts a dangerous relationship with him. François Ozon’s latest film, The Double Lover, has a story-within-a-story structure, or “an image within an image.” Two stories develop on and under the surface of each, until they get stitched up in the end. Only then is the audience allowed to see the whole structure of it. Ozon prominently delivers the tricky images of double narratives without losing tension for a single moment throughout the film. Audiences will feel chilling excitement, as the director demonstrates his talent in thrillers with atmosphere and elements that are reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock: invisible threats, impulsive characters and hidden desires. Marine Vacth from Young & Beautiful plays the leading role while one of Belgium’s top actors, Jérémie Renier, plays the twin brothers in magnificent performances. (RHEE Souewon)
