Euphoria, Lisa Langseth’s first English-language film following Pure and Hotell (produced in Swedish), tells the story of two sisters reunited after a long separation. The main setting in this film is a Hospice Center in a dense forest, where a mysterious atmosphere lurks in once they pass the round-shaped main entrance. Consumed by death, this space emanates peculiar feelings due to the natural elements, such as a pond, trees and water. Eva Green’s character, who is dying, fits well into this space, while her younger sister, played by Alicia Vikander, is modern and full of life; two highly contrasting characters. Director Langseth’s skill in creating sensuous spaces truly shines, as do the performances by the two main actresses; the tension between the two is helped not only by Green’s subtle facial expressions and looks, but also the strangely unsettling music. Euphoria is another hit film, bringing Langseth and Vikander together once again after winning the Flash Forward Award at Busan International Film Festival in 2010. (RHEE Souewon)
