Program Note
The impact of the great earthquake that hit East Japan on March 11 is still being felt, particularly unimaginable pain by those who used to live near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. A husband who lost his wife has quit his job, a daughter who lost her mother has severed all contact with those around her. A civil servant trying to console them realizes that there is a limit to what he can do. Those who lost families suffer a great sense of loss while others feel guilty for being alive. They are alive but they are not living. Fukushima native Hiroki Ryuichi doesn’t intervene in their lives but simply fixes the camera on them, or follows them cautiously, depicting their time of loss; with the characters while keeping a certain distance. Such an attitude supports the characters by telling them that it’s not their fault. The film also has a turning point that infuses new hope into those who survive. That is why the last scene, where the main character prepares a meal, is quite touching. (HER Namwoong)

HIROKI Ryuichi
Born in Fukushima, Japan, Hiroki Ryuichi is an artist and editor as well as filmmaker, and his debut film is Catch the Woman Out (1982). His most internationally popular film Vibrator (2003) won many awards. His filmography includes It’s Only Talk (2006), April Bride (2009) and Kabukicho Love Hotel (2014).
