Program Note
Mika is working as a nurse by day and as a hostess by night. Feeling isolated by an uncertain anxiety, she has an obsession with death. Shinji, a construction worker, has simultaneous feelings of dread that something terrible will occur and vague hopes. Mika and Shinji share a common quirk of speaking thoughtlessly because they can’t bear silence among people. Due to the sudden death of her customer and friend, Mika gradually becomes intimate with Shinji. Under the night sky of Tokyo, the metropolis where everybody is isolated and love barely survives, these two wandering young people get to know each other a little, and have some hopes for life. Director Ishii Yuya’s movie The Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue is a sensuous love story told by two young people who bear deep loss in their heart. Through various visual and auditory experiments, director Ishii Yuya depicts the process by which modern youth in Japan, who don’t believe in love and are obsessed with death and being alienated, rediscover hope.
