Program Note
Mo Geumsan, a barber living in the countryside, is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Up to now, he has lived a routine life: He wakes up, works at the barbershop, exercises in the swimming pool, and drinks at the same bar every day. Soon after learning that his days are numbered, he decides to shoot a film before he dies. He asks his son, an aspiring film director, and his son’s girlfriend for help. The three travel to Seoul, and, after a great deal of trouble, end up making a short film that’s reminiscent of a Chaplin silent film. As the filming progresses (and despite his reluctance to film it), the son learns more and more about his father and Merry Christmas Mr. Mo becomes a loving tribute to him. Ki Joo Bong, who best known for his many supporting roles, plays the lead Mo Geumsan and excels at being Chaplin-esque in costume and acting. The film is the debut feature of Lim Dae Hyung, who took home awards from the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival and the Seoul Independent Film Festival with his short film The World of If.
