Program Note
A dying Arabian Sheikh travels across the Moroccan Atlas Mountains in a caravan to be buried in his hometown. When he dies along the way, most of the caravan give up the journey for fear of the mountain. Only Ahmed and Said keep their promise to take the corpse back to Sheikh’s hometown. But they need the Sheikh’s help. Divided into a prologue and three chapters, Mimosas is a mysterious film moving between two different worlds. There is the world where taxi drivers are hired to traverse the desert, and the world following the caravan’s journey through the harsh mountains. And a new mysterious world in which the former intervenes with the latter, completely stepping over time and space. In the last chapter, one caravaner is suddenly thrown into the world of taxi drivers. The connection between the two worlds is Shakib, who’s not very bright but determined and adds a religious element in this film full of symbols and mystery. Oliver Laxe’s camera captures the insignificant man in comparison to the great outdoors finding his way through life, and is full of reflections about a man’s duty and faith. The three taxis at the end heighten these reflections. Grand Prize-winner at the Cannes Film Festival International Critics’ Week.(RHEE Souewon)
