Program Note
In Judaism, the mourning period after a funeral is called “shiva”. However, one week is just not enough for Eyal and Vicky who lose their 25-year-old son. When “shiva” is over, each reacts differently. Vicky returns to her life as a teacher, ousting the substitute teacher. Eyal goes back to his son’s hospital to steal medical marijuana and gets high, then seeks out his son’s friend Zooler to play ping pong and watch Zooler play air guitar. One Week and a Day is a very touching film, which tries to convey the parents’ heavy sense of loss through comedy. Rather than portraying their sadness in a direct and emotional manner, the director reflects on how the father and mother react in their lives. He does so in a manner that, ironically, makes us keenly aware of their despair. Eyal’s absurd actions are a silent scream trying to overcome the pain. The last scene at the cemetery well reflects a father’s wish to do his best. The film is the feature debut of a young Israeli director and was screened in the International Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival.(RHEE Souewon)
