Ospina, together with Carlos Mayolo and Andrés Caicedo, belonged to Grupo de Cali. He has directed 32 films, including two features Pure Blood (1982) and Soplo de Vida (1999), and seven documentaries as well as many short films. His works have been shown at the Tate, the Guggenheim, and many other notable venues. Since 2007, he has been the director of the Cali International Film Festival.

Mayolo started out in 1967 making documentaries and ads. Along with Andrés Caicedo and Luis Ospina, he became a member of Cali Group, co-directing the short films Listen Look (1972) and Vampire of the Poverty (1978).
