Three is a medical action drama directed by the master of Hong Kong noir, Johnnie To. In a hospital ward, where life and death continually cross each other, the three protagonists have mingled feelings of fate. A neurosurgeon obsessed with obligation to save patients hides her feelings and pushes herself to extreme limits. A cop dares to break the law, believing that the culprit must be killed by fair means or foul to protect society. A suspect who becomes a patient mocks the order of the world, pledging himself to bloody revenge in spite of oncoming death. Their conflicted desires increasingly jeopardize the hospital. In Three, the characters are completely disconnected from one another, fixated on their own lusts without considering or associating among themselves. Under fatal circumstances, when an action with good intentions can eventually become a fault, the boundary between the good and the bad becomes unclear. Anything we can expect from To—exhaustive camerawork, composition vividly capturing bloodstains, increasingly tense editing, a narrative with an immersive sensation—are well put together here.
