Program Note
It’s a Saturday in Bucharest. The camera pans around through a busy street under construction and captures an SUV looking for a place to stop to pick up the family. It also captures a mother and daughter waiting restlessly for the car. Getting in the car together with the mother and daughter, the camera observes the driving man, Lari, and his relentlessly nagging wife. It’s already an irritating Saturday afternoon, but more chaos, conflict, and aggravation are waiting for Lari, heading to the memorial ceremony of his father who died 40 days before. Cristi Puiu is already known for his absurdist work, The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), set in a hospital. This time, in Sieranevada he closely observes a microcosm called the family. A cramped, old apartment in Romania, where family members bump into each other, moving from corridors to rooms. The camera hides awkwardly and uncomfortably in the corner, slowly building up a visual, psychological tension. Following the rhythm of the film requires patience, yet it will lead to a moment of truth about family and the human being.
